CABEI has expressed its commitment to support its member countries in their fight against the effects of climate change, both in their efforts for mitigation and adaptation (50/50). However, taking into consideration that the Central American region is one of the region’s most vulnerable to climate change worldwide, more focused support on adaptation is sought for the countries most affected by natural phenomena resulting from climate change (droughts, floods, heat waves, landslides, forest fires, etc.).

CABEI is currently developing a Climate Change Strategy. This strategy is expected to be approved by the CABEI Board in the last quarter of 2023, or the first quarter of 2024. In terms of goals, CABEI has set 40% of annual commitments for climate change operations as objective within the framework of the 2020-2024 CABEI Environmental and Social Strategy.

CABEI has an Environmental and Social Strategy for the 2020-2024 period, which is conceived as a tool that incorporates the set of commitments, guidelines, measures, and national and international, mandatory and voluntary Bank guidelines, whose purpose is to prevent or avoid the potential risks and mitigate, reverse and/or compensate the socio-environmental impacts that could be generated with the implementation of the action measures of the Bank’s Institutional Strategy during the 2020-2024 period.

In this sense, through this strategy, the Bank seeks to finance and support member and beneficiary countries in the development and execution of environmentally and socially sustainable programs and projects and to improve capacities to assess, measure and manage environmental risks and impacts. and social aspects of the projects.

The 2020-2024 strategy comprises four cross-cutting elements:

  1. Management of environmental and social risks of operations.
  2. Climate resilience, mitigation, and adaptation.
  3. Social Inclusion.
  4. Equity and gender equality.

Institutionally, the Governors Assembly of CABEI delivered three statements to express the commitment of the highest level of Authority of CABEI regarding Climate Change. These are:

  1. April 2016: Statement to Promote and Support Actions to Finance Adaptation and Mitigation to Climate Change.
  2. April 2019: Statement on Zero Carbon Emissions, focused on refraining from financing projects related to the exploration and extraction of charcoal and to the energy generation based on charcoal.
  3. June 2022. CABEI’s statement of commitment to the Glasgow Climate Pact.
